In May 2013, Los Angeles Jiffy Lube locations were again the subject of a KNBC investigation. These procedures included engine flushes and fuel injection cleaning which can cause engine and fuel injection problems. In 2009, Jiffy Lube was found to be performing repair procedures on vehicles that were recommended against by the manufacturer due to the potential to cause engine damage. At the end of the investigation, Jiffy Lube installed cameras in their stores to allow customers to observe repairs. After the investigation aired, Jiffy Lube claimed to perform sweeping changes to their training program to prevent this, though among the training tactics, was having workers recognize the tactics of an investigative reporter and evade further scrutiny. During the investigation, five out of nine Jiffy Lube locations charged undercover reporters for work that was not performed. In 2003, Jiffy Lube was the focus of a KNBC investigative report that alleged that Jiffy Lube was charging customers for services not performed. The OCS program moves away from the old model of changing oil every 3,000 miles and provides a schedule that is unique for each driver. The new program allows Jiffy Lube customers to choose how often they have their oil changed based on a number of variables including vehicle manufacturer recommendations, driving habits, and road conditions. In June 2011, Jiffy Lube introduced a new program called Oil Change Schedule (OCS). Pennzoil-Quaker State was ultimately purchased by Shell Oil Company in 2002. įollowing the merger of Pennzoil and Quaker State in 1998, the 581 Q Lube stores were merged into the Jiffy Lube brand, then possessing 1,541 stores, with overlapping operations being closed down. In 1991, it became a subsidiary of Pennzoil. Jiffy Lube went public in 1987, and had opened over 1,019 franchises and company stores by 1989. It is this year which Jiffy Lube generally states as its founding date with Hindman as its founder. James Hindman, a football coach at Western Maryland College, bought out Washburn's seven franchises and established Jiffy Lube International, relocating the headquarters to Baltimore, Maryland. Over the following years, Washburn franchised a number of Jiffy Lube stores within Utah. The first Jiffy Lube store was established on 36th Street in Ogden, Utah by Edwin H. Also, Jiffy Lube was ranked number 15 in Entrepreneur Magazine 's 2012 Franchise 500 and number 73 on Franchise Times ' 2011 Top 200 Franchise Chains by Worldwide Sales. The company was ranked first on National Oil and Lube News 2011 Tops in the Fast Lubes Industry Rankings. There are about 2,000 Jiffy Lube franchises in North America, all of them independently owned by 252 operators, with about 24 million customers each year as of 2002.

workers who were cut will also get 16 weeks of their base salary as severance, plus two weeks for every year they worked at the company. In a particularly chaotic round of dismissals, Twitter cut roughly half of its workforce last week with many employees finding out they’d lost their jobs when they were suddenly cut off from Slack or email.Īt Meta, employees will continue to have access to their emails so that they can say goodbye to colleagues, though they’ve been cut off from more sensitive corporate systems, Zuckerberg said. Snap Inc., parent of rival app Snapchat, is also scaling back, saying in August that it would eliminate 20% of its workforce. on Tuesday said it cut hundreds of workers from sales teams, while Apple Inc., Inc. Meta is joining a spate of technology companies that have announced job cuts in recent weeks or said they planned to pause hiring. “But the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than expected. Zuckerberg said in the statement that he’d anticipated that the surge in e-commerce and web traffic from the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns would be part of a permanent acceleration. The retrenchment, the company’s most drastic since the founding of Facebook in 2004, reflects a sharp slowdown in the digital advertising market, an economy wobbling on the brink of recession and Zuckerberg’s multibillion-dollar investment in a speculative virtual-reality push called the metaverse. Meta, whose stock had plunged 71% this year through Tuesday, is taking steps to pare costs following several quarters of disappointing earnings and a slide in revenue. Managers found out which of their reports were to be laid off Wednesday morning, the message said.Ī Meta spokesman declined to comment on the message. Meta told employees that decisions about who would be impacted were made “at the highest leadership levels” and that direct managers weren’t involved in the eliminations, according to a message to remaining employees viewed by Bloomberg. Zuckerberg said that while reductions will happen across the company, the recruiting team will be disproportionately affected and business teams would be restructured “more substantially.” Meta will also reduce its real estate footprint, review infrastructure spending and transition some employees to desk sharing, with more cost-cutting announcements expected in the coming months. “I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted.” “I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here,” Zuckerberg said in the statement that was sent to Meta employees and posted on the company’s website. The company, which owns Facebook and Instagram, will also extend its hiring freeze through the first quarter. Zuckerberg then addressed employees, asking them to thank those who lost their jobs, and noting that employees outside North America will face uncertainty while the company sorts out who is affected, according to people familiar with the matter. The reductions, equal to about 13% of the workforce, were disclosed Wednesday in a statement. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said the company will cut more than 11,000 jobs, calling himself responsible for the first major round of layoffs in the social media giant’s history. How does one prove (4)? Assume that an element x ofīelongs to exactly r of the sets A i. Whether it's added or subtracted depends on n: for n = 2 it was subtracted, for n = 3 added - take a clue from here. The process goes on with sums being alternately added or subtracted until we come to the last term - the intersection of all sets A i. (The condition i < j < k assures that every intersection is counted only once.) We add the sum of the elements of intersections of the sets taken three at a time. Those are the elements that belong to at least three of the sets A i. When we subtract the sum of the number of elements in such pairwise intersections, some elements may have been subtracted more than once. Since A i∩ A j = A j∩ A i, to avoid duplications we arbitrarily decide to consider only pairs ( A i, A j) with i < j. We wish to consider every such intersection, but each only once. Those are the elements that belong to at least two of the sets A i, or the intersections A i∩ A j. as we already know, if the sets A i are not disjoint, some elements will have be counted more than once. On the right, we first count elements in each of the sets separately and add the up. What does (4) say? On the left is number of elements in the union of n sets. In the more general case where there are n different sets A i, the formula for the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle becomes: (4) It is then counted in every term of (2') - 4 times added and 3 times subtracted - again adding up to 1. Lastly, let x belong to all three sets A, B, C. On the right, it is counted in | A|, | B|, and | A∩ B| - twice added, once subtracted. Then on the right of (2') it is counted only once in | A|. As such, it's counted once in the left-hand side of (2'). But there is another approach with a more manageable generalization to the case of any finite number of sets, not just three. We could derive (2') from (2) in the manner of (3) - and this is a good exercise in using set-theoretical notations. What about if there are three sets: A, B, C? For three sets, the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle reads (2') Since A∩ B and B - A are disjoint as are A and B - A, and moreover A∪ B = A∪( B - A) and B = ( A∩ B)∪( B - A), it follows from (1) that (3) Here's an argument that may appear more rigorous. To obtain an accurate number | A∪ B| of elements in the union we have to subtract from | A| + | B| the number | A∩ B| of such elements. In short, counted twice were the elements of A∩ B. Which are they? The elements that were counted twice are exactly those that belong to A (one count) and also belong to B (the second count). Indeed, in | A| + | B| some elements have been counted twice (the common siblings of the two brothers). If A and B are not disjoint, we get the simplest form of the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle: (2) (Consider also such a question: two brothers have three siblings each. and this is how - by following its plot - we arrived at where we are today: masters of a vast amount of accumulated knowledge in control of fantastically powerful technology that could not have been foreseen at the beginning of the story. Well, what can one say? Is it not what is called Turning an idea around in one's mind? Once the humankind began composing the story of counting, the plot acquired life and logic of its own. Is it not too artificial to count sets that are not disjoint? After all, this would never happen with counting by grouping. The latter form is suggestive of the question, What if A and B are not disjoint? Or is it? with no common elements) wholes and combine them into one. Instead of splitting the whole into two groups, we start with two ( disjoint, i.e. This is exactly same statement with a somewhat different emphasis. Since X = A∪ B, the idea of counting by grouping can also be expressed as (1) We shall consider that statement on its own merits. If a group of objects X is split into two groups - denoted A and B, which means that they have no common elements ( A∩ B = Ø) and together combine into the whole ( X = A∪ B), then the number of elements | X| in the group X can be arrived at by first counting elements of A and then counting elements of B. The latter is a statement of legitimacy of counting by grouping. If X = A ∪ B and A ∩ B = Ø, then | X| = | A| + | B|.Every group of objects A can be associated with a quantity - denoted | A| - called the number of elements in A.The second describes its fundamental property. The first just states that counting makes sense. The Principle itself can also be expressed in a concise form. From the First Principle of Counting we have arrived at the commutativity of addition, which was expressed in convenient mathematical notations as a + b = b + a. As he says in this interview,“My favorite part of writing is the research, and the math, and the figuring all that stuff out.” “The largest nuclear reactor on Earth makes about eight gigawatts. In Project Hail Mary, Ryland Grace wakes up from a coma with a bunch of tubes sticking out of him (including that spot where the sun don’t shine) and realizes that he has no memory of what happened - and eventually, through a bit of complicated science, realizes and remembers that he’s the sole survivor of a mission that’s the last ditch chance to save Earth from a star-eating microbe ( “Evolution can be insanely effective when you leave it alone for a few billion years.”). “Yes.”In The Martian, Mark Watney woke up with an antenna sticking out of his chest and realized he had to science the shit out of it if he wanted to survive on Mars. “The whole world put you in charge of solving this problem, and you came directly to a junior high school science teacher?” (Yeah, this book’s protagonist tends to sound like he’s 85 - he’s just not a foul-mouthed sort of a scientist): By golly*, I am so gosh-darn* happy right now. “I’d have to do the math to know for sure but - I can’t help it, I want to do the math right now.”This book is half science experiments, half wacky buddy comedy - and it just works so so so well! That nerdy glee I felt on every page of The Martian is back full force. If you’re using an old PC to power your Plex server, consider replacing its boot drive with a cheap, low-capacity SSD, such as the Kingston A400. Like any other computer, your Plex server will boot faster with an SSD system drive, and you should notice less lag while navigating its library. While there’s no reason to store your media on an SSD, there are benefits to using an SSD as your Plex Media Server system drive. Consolidating everything into a NAS device makes your Plex server smaller and easier to manage, but NAS devices that are powerful enough to keep up with Plex’s demands are a little expensive. Some people use a NAS device to hold and manage media alongside their Plex server, while others run the entire operation, server and all, on a single NAS device. If you’re familiar with Linux, try using a distro without a GUI to save computer resources and maximize performance. That said, Linux is ideal because it requires little maintenance and is very power efficient. Windows and macOS-based servers offer similar performance to Linux-based servers, so if you aren’t comfortable with Linux, don’t bother using it. Plex works on Windows, Linux, macOS, and dedicated NAS systems like the Synology Diskstation. Of course, you can save a lot of money turning any old PC or laptop into a Plex server, but such a machine will take up a lot of space and use a lot of power. These features include binaural sound and visual augmented reality to enhance immersion pre-curated soundscapes to deliver easily accessed relaxation and the ability to share a link directly to soundscapes to improve participants' sense of connection with others. Based on these themes, we chose a set of features that fulfilled the desires expressed by our participants. Responses from these interviews were analysed for common themes, with immersion, relaxation, and connection emerging as the key themes. We asked our participants about spatial audio, graphics, and interaction, how and if they could enhance soundscapes. In the co-design study, we aimed to investigate how we could use natural soundscapes to enhance wellbeing, specifically how we could use augmented reality audio techniques to do this. We hoped this would also lead to a user-led design process, ultimately producing a prototype that would interest our audiences. We ran a short co-design study with our colleagues to better understand how we could use augmented reality audio with soundscapes. This work was inspired by our conversations with the BBC Sound Effects archive team to explore how spatial audio and augmented reality (AR) could lead to different uses of the collection and the Soundscapes for Wellbeing project, which investigates the wellbeing benefits of nature sounds. We then imported the mix into Soundscape Explorer to listen in 3D and position each sound source relative to the background image. We used the Sound Effects Mixer to find audio clips from the archive and set the timing for each effect. A sphere represents each sound, and you can interact with the sounds to move them or change their volume. Knowing the “mechanism of injury” gives you an idea of how serious the associated injuries may be. With a small accelerating object such as a bungee cord or hockey puck, there is often more direct globe trauma than with larger objects like a fist or soccer ball where some of the force is absorbed by the orbital rim and periorbital area. It is useful to know the size and shape of the object, as well as the force and velocity at which the object struck the eye. Determination of the mechanism of injury helps guide suspicion for injuries to the globe, eyelids, optic nerve, and adjacent ocular adnexal structures. Once life- and sight-threatening injuries have been addressed and the patient is medically stable, the oculoplastic surgical assessment should include a thorough medical and surgical history. A comprehensive ophthalmologic examination should be performed by an ophthalmologist. Stabilization of the airway and cardiopulmonary system is of utmost importance, particularly in the polytrauma patient. Initial assessment and management are guided by the severity and nature of the patient’s injuries. This surgery to place an orbital implant for orbital fracture repair often leaves little or no scarring, and the recovery period is usually brief. An orbital floor fracture or “blowout fracture” is most often associated with midfacial trauma ranging from mild and seemingly insignificant to severe and debilitating. She also uses a variety of the latest thin orbital implants to seal the hole in the orbit caused by the fracture. Sherman performs an advance technique for the orbital blow-out fracture repair, all done through a hidden incision behind the lower eyelid, minimizing visible scars. If there is only an orbital fracture and no other significant injury, surgical orbital fracture repair is often performed in an outpatient surgery center, with the patient usually being allowed to go home 1-2 hours after surgery.ĭr. Some injuries may require surgical repair to realign bones and restore normal eye movement. Treatment for a blowout fracture of the orbit includes cold compresses, pain medications, and wound irrigation and cleansing. Sherman will discuss what types of treatment are needed to repair the orbital fracture for best results. Once the fracture is reviewed on the CT scan and the patient is examined, Dr. If the ophthalmologist suspects the presence of an orbital fracture, diagnosis of orbital fractures is best made by CT scan. Sometimes eye injuries, such as eyeball and eyelid lacerations, can occur as a result of the blowout fracture. How is a blowout fracture of the orbit treated?įirst, a complete eye exam is performed by an ophthalmologist to assess the extent of the eye injuries. This can prevent the injured eye from moving normally, thus explaining the double vision or a pulling sensation on eye movement that often occurs. In some cases, the eye itself is not seriously injured, but the lower eye muscles may become trapped in the broken bones. Eye pain, facial pain, and facial swelling.Numbness of the lower lid, lip, and cheek should make one suspicious for an orbital fracture.Double vision or restriction of eye movement, especially in up gaze. What are the symptoms of a blowout fracture of the orbit? This can leave the orbital bones out of position, which can affect eye muscle movement and cause a sinking of the tissues around the eye. A forceful impact to the bones around the eye can cause the thin bones surrounding the eye to “blowout” or fracture. What is a blowout fracture of the orbit?Ī blowout fracture of the orbit is an injury that results in a fracture of the thin bones that surround the eye.
